Geneva Lions Sponsor new club in South Sudan
Here is the photo of the new Lions in Juba South Sudan. This
is the core group the office holders at a dinner hosted by
Dr. Anono at a Chinese restaurant in the capital of the nation Juba.
At this point we are waiting for the charter, still a hold
up with documents being reviewed by the government's lawyer
but it seems to be coming through very soon.
Most of these new members are teachers and are paid only 100
USD a month. This makes it very difficult for them to pay the
required fees for the Lions which is 35 USD to join and 40
USD dollars a year in dues. What they lack in monetary richness
they more than make up for in their vision and enthusiasm.
This group has met 3 times since I left 3 weeks ago. They would
like to teach their nation about service and working together
to solve problems, even if they are not one that directly effects
yourself.
Most of the members have a personal experience with a blind
relative and they would like to teach people about preserving
their sight and help with a sunglass and eye health education
project, as well as literacy.
This is a very exciting opportunity for our Lions Club to
make a global impact and connection. We are blessed to be a
part of a circle of support that literally wraps around this
whole world! It is as if we are connecting the circle by joining
with this group that is rising up in the least developed and
newest nation in the world. South Sudan is fragile and volatile
and the example these new Lions set for their fellow citizens
could have a profound impact.
Thank you for your help and support!
Proud to be a lion! -Lion Wendi Dwyer
